Halifax Royal Oak. A Friday night in Halifax and we played at the monthly Doghouse club above the Royal Oak pub. The set list was the same as our previous gig (Manchester). We had time to play 'Ex-Members of the Fall Club' at this one, but I neglected to write it down on the setlist, so we forgot to play it. Doh! It was a top night all round and we had a splendid time. There had to be a customary mishap, of course, and this time it was Rik's guitar strap that broke, forcing him to play the 100 mph strumming of 'Sometimes' crouching down on stage. Phew! After we'd played, Instant Species and Napoleon III followed and both were fab. We particularly admired Napoleon's guitar with the strobe light inside. You can see some photos from the night over on the Doghouse website.

Manchester Retro Bar. Our first gig in Manchester, and to celebrate we wore matching NHS-style spectacles and unveiled some new stage moves. Brand new tune, 'There's Something Dead in the Road' received its debut and went down very well. This gig also marked the first appearance of my new megaphone. As we were pressed for time, 'The Ex-Members of the Fall Club' had to be omitted from the set. This was the first gig we've played where we didn't play the song, with the exception of our brief appearance at last year's 'Summer Daze 2' festival. An historic occasion eh? Broken string count: 2.

Wakefield Escobar. A Monday night gig at 'Louder Than Bombs' in Wakefield's Escobar. Good place! Our drummer stepped off a train and had to proceed directly to the venue to play this one, after enjoying a very boozy stag weekend in Cardiff. We're amazed he got through it. As it happened, he didn't completely avoid incident during the gig, as the floor tom toppled over during 'Sunset Yellow' to keep him on his toes. We only found out there was a rider for the bands late on in the evening, after we'd already bought ourselves several drinks. Ho hum! 586 sadly didn't make it due to a broken-down van, but deserving a mention are the Old House, who were also on the bill and were rather fab.

Accrington, the Attic. Arriving at the Attic in Accrington, we found that the venue was on the second floor of the building... and it had no lift. Luckily we roped in one of the support bands to help us carry the gear up the two flights of stairs. After soundchecking we had time for a visit to Papa Luigi's Italian restaurant around the corner before returning to the venue to catch the first support band, an impressive group of young punksters. We enjoyed this gig - it was fab gear! 'Sometimes' is shaping up to be the jangly thrash monster that we always intended it to be.

Can you hear the sleigh bells? That will be the arrival of the new Christmas compilation, 'A Very Cherry Christmas', that's out now on Lancaster's Cherryade Music. We were delighted to be asked to contribute to the compilation; our track, 'In the Bleak Mid-Afternoon', is something of a departure from our usual sound as it's quite a melancholic number, but nicely festive with it. The CD finds us in the company of the likes of Misty's Big Adventure, Steveless and many more - and all for just £5. See the Cherryade website for ordering details. An ideal stocking filler for all the family to enjoy.

Summer Daze 2 Festival. The setting was the bandstand amidst the greenery of Blackpool's Stanley Park. The sun mostly stayed away (well, it was a Bank Holiday weekend) but at least it didn't rain. Our early afternoon slot saw the debut of new song 'It Must be the Pipes'. Lots of other bands played (hence the shortened set) and it was a great afternoon despite the alcohol ban.

Leeds Bassment. Back to back gigs at Leeds Bassment and Blackpool's Jenx. Leeds was loud! We borrowed a guitar amp off one of the other bands and it made a ferocious racket. I think it made us all a little psychotic. Great performance though! Blackpool the following evening was a little more subdued in comparison.

A little off topic here, but tonight I went to Feedback in Lancaster to see Being 747 headline. Quite why this excellent band are better known is a mystery. If you have the opportunity to go and see then, seize it.

Leeds Packhorse. Thanks to everyone who braved the heat to see us at the Packhorse on a muggy night in Leeds on Friday. The gig marked the debut of Bryn's brand new drumkit, plus the first live appearance of our surf song, which opened the set. Sorry to disappoint the person who repeatedly called for us to play 'Roadrunner' though! Thanks to Howard's Way for arranging things; love the toast-wrapped CDs. We'll be back in Leeds next month for a gig at the Bassment.

Leeds Royal Park Cellars. We opened our live account for 2005 with a great gig at the Royal Park Cellars in Leeds, on Friday 21st January, sandwiched in between fine performances by Jail and headliners Being 747. Rik cut his finger open while slashing at his guitar during second song, 'The Girl on the Bus', and bled all over his Gibson. People came into the dressing room afterwards to marvel at it. Jamie from Jail helped out on 'The Ex-Members of The Fall Club' by playing kazoo and keyboards, while his bandmate Jon had a great time holding up our A3 sheets of paper with the names of the ex-members on them for the audience to see, before throwing them all over the floor. I lost two (Steve Hanley and Ben Pritchard) to souvenir hunters.
There's a review of the gig on the Leeds Music Scene website.
